Wild About Matcha

The Origin of Matcha

Stretching all the way back to the 17th century, matcha was first enjoyed by the Tang Dynasty in China. They found that by steaming the leaves they could form bricks, which would make it easier for sellers to take on trade travels. The tea bricks were prepared by roasting and grounding the leaves then mixing the tea powder with water and salt.

Around the 10th century, a Japanese Buddhist monk, by the name of Eisai, returned to his home country after many years spent studying Buddhism in China. He brought with him the much revered matcha tea seeds and the Buddhist traditional method for preparing matcha tea.

Many centuries later, people around the world are still seeking out this fountain of youth elixir. In recent years, matcha has gone from a niche product used only in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies to a drink craze in the form of lattes, smoothies and even doughnuts! Needless to say, this superfood is one that will be around for years to come.

How to Properly Store

Choose a container with an airtight lid, preferably one that will not let light in and store in your fridge. You will want to choose a container that can securely keep the contents of your matcha free from any other odor that might be in the fridge. This will extend the life of your matcha and retains the oh so important chlorophyll. An element within matcha that not only gives it that gorgeous emerald green color but is a powerful detoxifier, eliminating chemicals and heavy metals from your body. Properly stored, matcha will last for up to one year.
